in a Dog Country

Shortly after I wrote “saying A Prayer”, my [virtual] friend Tunde Shaba wrote a piece about the plight of African nations (in this case nigeria) that I found brilliant.

The poem used the George Orwell style of awakening (in Animal Farm) to point the corruption that the country’s leaders are wreaking to the nation. And, there continual oblivion to the dying state of the country and the suffering of its citizen. With this in mind, enjoy the beauty of Shaba’s lines:

O Lord, hear our wailing
As we bark from the backside
Of Dog Country …

Hear, O Lord the great God:
Let not the little gods—
Who have strove in vain
To impersonate you—
Become dogs in frustration …
Neither let them remain
Gods in grand deception …

O Lord the great God
Let the dogs in our midst
Become good gods
Who ask for no offerings
In times of drought and disease …

Let the dogs among us
Faithful watchers and witnesses
Of the ebb and tide of boom and doom
Also become gods before they die
Lest they go rabid with regret
Why they ever lived …
We do not want no one
Blaming you, Lord
As the maker of all …

This is our prayer, Lord
Let dogs become gods
Let not gods become dogs … again …
Amen.

(-Tunde Shaba)
